Galileo
was the greatest astronomer and scientist of the late renaissance. Often more
remembered from his tribulations than his successes, he was for many centuries
considered the most controversial figure in science. Though mostly forgotten,
because of his famous astronomical inventions and discoveries he was also the
first (or one of the first) to build a microscope.
Even when NASA scientists prepared for the great mission to Jupiter in
the 1970s and 325 years after Galileo’s death, they were wary of possible
consequences the name Galileo could have when it was associated with their
spacecraft. Science and novelty has always been accompanied by tribulations and
anxiety. With the launch of this new research organization we honor those
scientists whose life was dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge, like
Galileo’s.
